  • Yes — if you plan to print your card (especially through a professional printer), adding bleed is highly recommended.

    What is Bleed?

Bleed is the extra space (usually 3mm or 0.125") around your design that allows for slight movement during trimming. Without it, you may end up with unwanted white borders at the edges of your card.

How to Add Bleed in Canva (Step-by-Step)

    1. Open your design in Canva.

    2. From the top-right, click "File" > "Show print bleed".

      • A faint dotted line will appear — anything outside of this will be trimmed off.

    3. Extend any background colours or images beyond the dotted line so they cover the full bleed area.

    4. Keep all important text and elements inside the inner “safe zone” (inside the dotted line).

    5. When you're ready to download, click:

      • “Share” > “Download”

      • Choose PDF Print

      • Tick the box for “Crop marks and bleed”

      • Click Download

Important: Always confirm with your printer what bleed size they require. Most printers use a 3mm bleed, but this may vary.

Printing at Home vs. Print Shops

    • Home printing: Bleed may not be necessary, but it's still good practice. Use thicker paper (200–300gsm) and test alignment first.

    • Professional printing: Always use a print-ready PDF with bleed and crop marks enabled.
